PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. – Prairie du Chien police have now charged a 39-year-old man from Lancaster, Wis. with first degree reckless homicide in the death of 65-year-old Daniel Welsch of Prairie du Chien. Those charges stem from an investigation into a body that was found at a Prairie du Chien residence last week.
Police reported last week that on October 25 at 10:18 p.m. the Prairie du Chien Police Department were dispatched to the 1000 block of East Wisconsin Street in Prairie du Chien for a Welfare Check. Upon arrival on scene officers located a deceased male inside of a residence who has now been identified as Welsch.
Police say upon further investigation wounds were found on the deceased male consistent with trauma caused by a sharp object. Officers obtained a search warrant for the residence and requested the assistance of the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation Mobile Crime Lab and Forensic Unit.
Police went on to say based on evidence gathered and statements received from witnesses, an additional search warrant was requested and granted for a residence in Grant County, Wisconsin. At approximately 12:30 p.m. on October 26, staff from the Prairie du Chien Police Department executed that search warrant with the assistance of the Southwest Wisconsin Emergency Response Team.As a result of that search warrant police said they arrested a 39-year-old male, who has now been identified as Jessie J. Slaughter of Lancasgter, Wis. At the time of this incident Slaughter was out on active bond through Onieda County for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. Slaughter was arrested and transported to the Crawford County Jail.
Charges referred to Crawford County District Attorney include: first degree reckless homicide and bail jumping.
