La Farge man on probation arrested on drug related charges after search of home

LA FARGE, Wis. – Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson and La Farge Police Chief Steven Palmer jointly report the arrest of Matthew Kenneth Lecher, age 50, of La Farge, WI. Lecher was
taken into custody early Monday afternoon, November 20, 2023, in the village of La
Farge.

Lecher is under active community supervision for either probation, parole, or extended supervision, by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. The arrest was the result of the
search of a residence in the 500 block of East Penn Street pursuant to 2013 Wisconsin Act 79.
The act allows law enforcement to search a person’s residence, and any property under his or
her control at any time during his or her period of supervision if the officer reasonably suspects
that the person is committing, is about to commit, or has committed a crime or a violation of a
condition of release to extended supervision. This applies to anyone placed on probation for a
felony or for any violation of chapters 940, 948, or 961 of the Wisconsin State Statutes. Lecher
met the criteria.

Lecher was booked into the Vernon County Detention for:
1) Probation Violation
2) Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
3) Possession of Marijuana

Lecher discharged the contents of a syringe onto the ground when first contacted by law
enforcement.

A bail hearing will be scheduled, and formal charges will be sought through Vernon County
District Attorney Angela Palmer-Fisher. Lecher is being held for the Wisconsin Department of
Corrections.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, La Farge Police, and the
Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
