WESTBY, Wis. – The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that despite life saving efforts by a passerby and emergency personnel a La Farge man collapsed, and later died while bicycling near Dell on Thursday.
The Sheriff’s report states that on June 27, at 8:15 a.m., the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center was notified about a bicyclist who collapsed near the intersection of County Highway P and Dell Road in the town of Clinton. The person reporting the incident to told the dispatcher that CPR was in progress. When deputies arrived on scene they identified the man Harry J. Monroe, 80, of rural LaFarge. According to witnesses at the scene who spoke to Monroe shortly before he collapsed, told deputies he was stopped along the road and believed he was having cramps. The witnesses reported after the short conversation, Monroe got back on his bicycle and road a short distance before he collapsed on the road.
LaFarge EMS and Tri-State Ambulance arrived on scene and continued with life saving efforts. Gundersen Air was also sent to the scene but did not land.
Monroe was later pronounced dead by the Vernon County Coroner’s Office.
