Iowa DOT says Black Hawk Bridge at Lansing will remain open for the summer

JULY 1, 2025

Today the Iowa Department of Transportation posted on social media that the Black Hawk Bridge that connects Iowa and Wisconsin at Lansing will remain open for the summer. That is good news for commuters and businesses on both sides of the river that have had to deal with intermittent closings of the bridge over safety concerns and high water.

You can read our previous stories about those closures here.

The Iowa and Wisconsin DOT are in the process of replacing the existing bridge by building a new bridge next to the old one. Engineers believe to construction process may have disturbed the support piers under the old bridge that caused excessive movement in the structure. That caused engineers to close the bridge twice and do temporary repairs.

The bridge a critical connecting point and when it is closed commuters, tourists and business traffic is forced to drive north to La Crosse or south of Prairie du Chien to cross the river. The new bridge is expected to be completed sometime in 2027.

The Iowa DOT also sent an update on July 2 that they have now poured the concrete on the Wisconsin side of the new bridge.
