Sept. 15, 2026

WESTBY, Wis. — A law enforcement incident at a private residence near Westby Area School District prompted precautionary safety protocols Tuesday before being resolved shortly after 1 p.m.

Around 12:15 p.m., Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reported that officers were responding to a situation contained to a private residence near the school district’s main campus. As a precautionary measure, the school district was notified and entered a secure shelter-in-place protocol while preparing statements for families.

By 1:08 p.m., the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office issued an update confirming the situation was under control and that schools had resumed their regularly scheduled activities. The Westby Police Department served as the lead agency handling the response.

Throughout the day, law enforcement agencies and school officials coordinated actions and maintained communication with parents and the public, though specific details regarding the exact nature of the incident at the private residence were not publicly released in the updates.
