Habitat for Humanity seeking qualified Hillsboro homebuyers to participate in homeownership program

HILLSBORO, Wis. – Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region is seeking four qualified homebuyers in Hillsboro for the construction of new homes as part of their Homeownership Program to expand access to affordable, energy-efficient housing and clean-energy resources in Vernon County.

The homes are part of Habitat’s 10-home development and feature CrossMod construction, which combines the efficiency of factory-built housing with the look, feel and permanence of traditional site-built homes. CrossMod homes are designed to be durable, energy-efficient and affordable to operate.

Each home will also include a solar array and solar backup system, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and potentially lowering monthly energy costs.

The traditional Habitat homeownership opportunity is available to a household with an income below 60% of area median income (AMI), currently $57,600 for a family of four in Vernon County. The selected homeowner will receive downpayment assistance and affordable financing structured so that their monthly mortgage payment does not exceed 30% of their household income. They will also complete 150 partnership hours, contributing time toward construction of their home and other Habitat activities.

Habitat is also seeking at least three additional income-eligible homebuyers with household incomes below 80% of AMI, currently $76,800 for a family of four. These buyers must be mortgage loan ready. They will be eligible for downpayment assistance and Habitat-specific financing that can provide up to a 2.5 percentage-point reduction in their interest rate compared with traditional mortgage financing. These buyers will not be required to complete partnership hours.

“These homes provide an opportunity for families who may be able to afford homeownership with the right combination of assistance and financing, but who are still priced out of many homes on the market,” said Kahya Fox, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region. “They are also thoughtfully designed, energy-efficient homes that incorporate innovative construction and solar technology.”

Applications for the Hillsboro homes are open through October 9, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eligibility information and application materials are available at www.habitatlacrosse.org/homeownership. Informational sessions will be held September 23, 29, and October 8. Prospective homebuyers may also email Lauren@HabitatLaCrosse.org with questions about the application process.
