CHASEBURG, Wis. -The Chaseburg Area Cancer Walk marked its 20th anniversary this weekend, drawing hundreds of participants and raising between $30,000 and $50,000 to support local cancer patients.
“We had a lot of people around here, both at the silent auction and for the live auction. And again, it’s all for a big cause. We have gone local now, so all the money goes locally to Gundersen, Mayo, and Vernon Health,” said Cancer Walk organizer Monty Gilbertson. “We’re really happy about the move, and it was a very successful day.”
The event, which recently changed its name to the Chaseburg Area Cancer Walk, featured the theme “20 Years of Hope” and invited back the past 19 honorary chairpersons to speak.
“This year’s honorary chair was Becky Nerison. She did an absolute excellent job. If you didn’t hear her speech, she had a number of people in tears, for sure,” Gilbertson said.
The walk, which typically draws 300 to 400 people, has raised about $64,000 so far this year. “This event alone will raise anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 depending upon how the event turns out. Going into the day, we were at about $64,000 for the year,” Gilbertson said.
The funds raised will benefit cancer patients at local health organizations.
“There’s going to be some very happy people at Gundersen and Mayo and Vernon Memorial, and they’ll get to use that money for their cancer patients,” Gilbertson added.
The event also serves as a time to honor survivors and remember those lost to cancer.
“We honor the survivors. We honor those in the past. And we’re all here to fight it. It’s the same great group doing the same great stuff,” Gilbertson said.
