Gary R. Beyer, 78, of Janesville, Wis., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Janesville. He was born on August 6, 1946, in Viroqua, Wisconsin, to the late Ferne (Witcraft) Beyer.
Gary proudly served in the United States Navy as a medic from 1963 to 1969, stationed in Guam and the Mediterranean. On December 13, 1969, he married the love of his life, Nancy A. Richmond, in Janesville. Together, they raised two children, Daryck and Bethany, and built a life full of love, adventure, and cherished memories.
Gary dedicated nearly 40 years to his career as a Radiology Technologist at Mercy Hospital and SSM Health. His passion for his work extended beyond his own career as he played a pivotal role in educating countless radiology technologist students through a partnership with Blackhawk Technical College.
A man of many interests, Gary was a devoted Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 540 at Washington Elementary School and a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers. He found joy in woodworking, quilting, and traveling with Nancy after their retirement. The couple’s love for exploration was shared with their children, as they spent summers camping and visiting roadside attractions across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These family trips created a legacy of adventure that continues to inspire his children.
Gary’s greatest joy in life was his role as a grandfather. For nearly 26 years he was his grandchildren’s biggest supporter, attending countless sporting events and celebrating their achievements. Friday nights were especially meaningful as he cheered on the Evansville Blue Devils, watching his granddaughter cheer and his grandson play football. A proud moment came when he had the honor of pinning his granddaughter at her radiology technologist graduation. Despite health challenges, Gary’s determination allowed him to witness his grandson play collegiate football, even attending a game this past October with the support of his family.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Nancy; his two children, Daryck (Angela Johnstad-Beyer) Beyer of Milwaukee and Bethany (Duane) Severson of Evansville; two cherished grandchildren, Genee’ (Kyle) Anderson and Tyr Severson; his sister, Wanda Davis of La Crosse; sister-in-law, Evelyn Beyer of Evansville; brother-in-law, Art Matz of Eland, WI; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ferne; two brothers, Alan and Robert Beyer; sister, Rhoda Matz; nephew Greg Matz; and close family friend, Byron Dach.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Apfel Wolfe Funeral Home, 21 S. Austin Rd., Janesville, with Rev. Matthew Poock officiating. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville at a later time.
