VIROQUA, Wis. — Residents across Vernon County should prepare for subfreezing temperatures Tuesday night, as the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory for much of southwestern Wisconsin.
Forecasters expect overnight lows to dip into the upper 20s to mid-30s, with the coldest readings likely in low-lying and rural areas. The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 9 a.m. Wednesday.
A Freeze Warning applies to areas where temperatures are expected to fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a risk to unprotected vegetation. A Frost Advisory covers regions where temperatures may range from 32 to 36 degrees, which can still damage sensitive plants.
Officials urge residents to take precautions by covering or bringing indoors any plants that could be harmed by the cold. Gardeners and growers should also consider protecting late-season crops.
The advisory includes Vernon County communities such as Viroqua, Westby, and Hillsboro, as well as neighboring areas in La Crosse, Crawford, and Richland counties.
This marks one of the season’s first widespread frost events, signaling a shift toward colder fall conditions.
