Free program to help Vernon County seniors prevent falls starts Sept. 28

Sept. 1, 2026

VIROQUA, Wis. — A free, seven-week program designed to help older area residents stay independent and reduce their risk of falling will launch in Viroqua later this month.

The program, known as “Stepping On,” is a 14-hour, evidence-based course slated to begin Sept. 28 at the Bethel Home Day Room. Organized and funded by the non-profit senior advocacy group Vernon County Over 50, the initiative is open to any community member who has experienced a fall, worries about falling, or simply wants to improve their stability.

According to organizers, the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging virtual curriculum has a proven track record, reducing falls among community-dwelling older adults by 31%. The program emphasizes practical, positive lifestyle modifications to help seniors walk confidently and maintain their physical autonomy.

“From the first session, participants put new skills to use,” organizers stated in an announcement, noting that group members will engage in weekly activities to reinforce key safety concepts.

To provide a comprehensive approach, the program will bring in physical therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare experts to help attendees adapt prevention strategies to their personal needs. Participants will learn to identify hidden hazards, ranging from improper footwear to the side effects of prescription medications, while building physical strength and balance. By the end of the course, each participant will have a personalized safety action plan to remain upright and active.

The weekly classes will run every Monday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for seven consecutive weeks at the Bethel Home, located at 614 S. Rock Ave. in Viroqua.

The program is being offered free of charge. Vernon County Over 50 is a 501(c)(3) organization funded entirely by free-will donations to make vital socialization and health programs accessible to all area seniors.
