Sept. 23, 2026
VIROQUA, Wis.––Aris Lara, Youth Services staff member at the McIntosh Memorial Library of Viroqua, will present Intro to Wildlife Tracking on Sept. 25 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. This hands-on outdoor workshop is designed for curious explorers ages 13-17 wanting to see the outdoors through the eyes of a tracker.
Participants will learn fundamental skills to identify local animal species and interpret the hidden stories left behind in tracks and sign. The workshop will also cover the basics of bird language, giving attendees a new way to listen and respond to the forest around them. This program is free and registration is not required.
“Wildlife tracking is far more than identifying footprints—it’s an ancient literacy written across the landscape that our modern world has largely forgotten,” said instructor Aris Lara. “Having spent years as an apprentice and instructor learning to read these subtle signs, I’m excited to share these tools with our community. I hope participants will join me in reviving this skill, discovering the wild stories around us, and deepening their place in the natural world.”
Drawing from years of experience in outdoor education, Lara will lead a series of immersive activities adapted directly from Jon Young’s acclaimed book, Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature. This class is an opportunity for participants of all skill levels to learn, explore, and experience the outdoors in a whole new way.
