LA CROSSE, Wis. — August marks National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), a time
dedicated to highlighting the critical role vaccinations play in protecting individuals and
communities from preventable diseases. Emplify Health by Gundersen joins the
nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the importance of immunizations for
people of all ages.
“Vaccines are one of the best tools we have to protect public health,” says Bryany Weigel,
vaccine program manager at Emplify Health by Gundersen. “National Immunization
Awareness Month is a time to remind everyone — from infants to seniors — that staying
up to date on vaccines is essential for both our personal health and the well-being of our
community.”
Immunizations have been a cornerstone of public health for decades, dramatically
reducing the incidence of diseases such as measles, polio and whooping cough. By
stimulating the body’s immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens, vaccines
prevent illness and reduce the spread of contagious diseases. This not only protects
vaccinated individuals but also helps protect those who cannot be vaccinated due to
medical conditions through the concept of herd immunity.
The campaign encourages people to talk with their healthcare providers about which
vaccines are recommended based on their age, health status, lifestyle and travel plans.
Emplify Health by Gundersen offers comprehensive vaccine services to support patients in
staying up to date on their recommended vaccinations.
Benefits of immunizations:
- Prevention of serious illness: Vaccines protect against diseases that can cause
severe complications, long-term health problems or even death. - Community protection: High vaccination rates help prevent outbreaks and protect
vulnerable populations, including infants, elderly adults and those with weakened
immune systems. - Cost-effective healthcare: Preventing disease through vaccination reduces
healthcare costs by avoiding hospitalizations, treatments and lost productivity.
“Vaccines are a vital part of maintaining public health and stopping the return of diseases
that were once common,” Weigel says. “We encourage everyone to use this month as an
opportunity to review their vaccination records and take active steps to protect themselves
and their loved ones.”
