HILLSBORO, Wis. — The latest Uncompensated Health Care Report released by the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) showed the state’s hospitals provided $1.8 billion in uncompensated care in Fiscal Year 2024. The report details the many ways Wisconsin’s non-profit hospitals and health systems care for their communities beyond patient care, often at a financial loss.
Among the top performers was Emplify Health by Gundersen Hillsboro Area, which ranked seventh out of 140 General medical-surgical (GMS) hospitals in the state for its financial assistance provided as a percentage of gross revenue.
WHAT IS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE? Financial assistance is care that a hospital provides to a patient who, after an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the patient’s ability to pay, is determined by the hospital to be unable to pay all or a portion of the hospital’s normal billed charges.
“We are deeply committed to providing care to those in need regardless of their ability to pay,” says Kristie McCoic, administrator at Emplify Health by Gundersen Hillsboro Area. “We are proud of our non-profit status and encourage patients experiencing difficulties paying their medical bills to speak with our financial assistance counselor. Our financial assistance program is a simple process, it does not affect your credit score and covers households up to four times the federal poverty level.”
