Emergency crews respond to chlorine leak at Westby Co-op Creamery

WESTBY, Wis. – In a written statement the Westby-Christiana Fire Department reports that on Tuesday, August 20 they responded to a chlorine leak at the Westby Co-op Creamery.

According to the statement, fire crews were dispatched to the Westby Coop Creamery at S. Main Street in Westby on a report of chlorine gas smell in the building. Fire department personnel arrived on scene and found that all employees had evacuated the building and there were no employees reporting illness or health issues. Crews were advised by staff that there was a small leak due to a valve not closing, but they thought the teak had been stopped.

Fire crews entered the building utilizing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and crews found the smell of chlorine inside the building but found no abnormal levels of chlorine on the exterior of the building. Crews worked to ventilate the building and eventually the chlorine levels subsided and staff were allowed back into the building.

During the incident there was no threat to the public. The staff of the incident a nearby daycare
was advised to shelter in place as a precaution.
