Election outcome overturned due to recount in town of Liberty Supervisor race

TOWN OF LIBERTY – As we previously reported, one of the local races for Supervisor in the town of Liberty in Vernon County appeared to be a tie on election night, and was decided on a coin toss. On election night the preliminary results as reported by the township to the County Clerk showed Carrie Vanek and Jason Vidas tied with 82 votes, and that Vanek subsequently won by a coin toss.

Vidas later asked for a recount in that race and that recount did take place on Saturday, April 5. That recount did change the outcome of that election due to a ballot that was thrown out due to a procedural issue. According to the County Clerk and Vidas it was discovered that one of the absentee envelopes was witnessed by a person who was also a candidate for another office on the ballot. This is not allowed.

The result is that recount the vote total changed from an 82-82 tie to an 82-81 result with Vidas having the 82. If Vanek does not appeal that outcome to the court within five days, Vidas is the winner.
