Driver injured, charged with OWI after vehicle crashes in Coon Valley yard

COON VALLEY, Wis. – The Coon Valley Police Department reports a single-vehicle crash that occurred on the 900 block of Central Avenue just after 10 o’clock Saturday night. According to a police report a vehicle was driving west when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The car skidded before bouncing over the curb and knocking down a mailbox. The reports says the vehicle continued over the curb and damaged multiple retaining devices and yard ornaments before striking a tree on a front lawn. The vehicle came to rest on its right side after dropping over an embankment, sustaining heavy damage and narrowly missing the residence.

The driver, and only occupant of the vehicle, was identified as Hunter Hackel, 28, of
La Crosse Wis. Hackel was not wearing a seat-belt and sustained non-life-threatening
injuries to his face, head, and knee before crawling out of the car. Hackel was
transported to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse for treatment.

Hackel was arrested for first offense operating while under the influence, operating with an expired driver license and failure to control a vehicle. He was later released from the hospital.

Assisting at the scene were the Coon Valley Police Department, the Westby Police
Department, Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Coon Valley First Responders and Fire
Department, Tri-State Ambulance, bystanders, and Legacy Towing.

Coon Valley Police Chief Welch reminds everyone to please arrange a sober driver or other safe ride prior to consuming alcohol away from home.
