DE SOTO, Wis. — A motorist was hospitalized Saturday night after losing control of an SUV in the town of Wheatland near De Soto. Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reported that dispatchers received a call regarding the crash at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 on Missel Road near the intersection of Axlen Road.

A 61-year-old man from Viroqua was driving south on Missel Road. The sheriff said the driver lost control while navigating a downhill curve. The SUV left the roadway and traveled down an embankment before striking several trees.
Emergency responders transported the driver to the hospital in Viroqua for treatment of his injuries. A passenger in the vehicle, identified as a 54-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries but declined transport.
Authorities noted that safety equipment functioned properly during the crash. Seat belts were in use and airbags deployed.
Poor weather and road conditions required the Town of Wheatland to assist at the scene. Several agencies responded to the incident including the Wheatland Fire Department and De Soto Fire Department.
Crews cleared the scene shortly before 9 p.m.. The sheriff indicated the incident remains under review. “The crash remains under investigation,” said Torgerson.
