VIROQUA, WISC.— Driftless Humane Society is celebrating World Rabies Day with a Rabies
Vaccination Clinic for dogs and cats. World Rabies Day is held annually on September 28th to raise awareness and advocate for global elimination of this deadly disease.
Rabies has a 99.9% mortality rate once symptoms appear. In humans, 40% of the victims are children younger than 15 years old. In 99% of human cases, it is caused by bites from dogs. On a global scale, Rabies kills approximately 59,000 people annually.
Common carriers of Rabies are skunks, bats, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes. Free-roaming dogs and cats may encounter these species and contract rabies if bitten. Rabies is preventable in dogs and cats with proper vaccinations. All pets should have their first Rabies vaccination starting at 3-4 months of age and be vaccinated every one to three years as directed by their veterinarian. Wisconsin law requires owners to vaccinate their cats and dogs.
“Rabies is a fatal disease that can be easily prevented in our pets with a vaccine. Regular vaccinations are essential to ensure the health of our animals and public safety of Vernon County residents,” said Amy Kleiber, Vernon County Health Department, Director/Health Officer.
The Driftless Humane Society, in partnership with the Vernon County Health Department, is hosting a free Rabies Vaccination Clinic for dogs and cats on Wednesday, September 25th from 4:00-6:00 pm. The clinic will be held at the shelter, located at 1150 Nelson Parkway in Viroqua. Preregistration and proof of Vernon County residence is required. Space is limited. “Our goal with our low-cost pet care clinics and the upcoming free rabies clinic, is to ensure that family pets are protected against deadly diseases. We hope to reach a population of dogs and cats that are currently unvaccinated. These clinics support the health of our community, pets, and people,” shared Emily Rozeske, Executive Director of Driftless Humane Society.
