VIROQUA, Wis. –– The McIntosh Memorial Library of Viroqua is excited to host a Badger Talk program by University of Wisconsin – Madison Professor Dr. Cody Wenthur inside the library lobby on Thursday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m.
This program is the final part of the library’s Opioid Awareness and Prevention Series this year, made possible by the Opioid Prevention and Abatement Steering Committee. Vernon County Sherrif Roy Torgerson will introduce the talk.
Dr. Cody Wenthur is an innovative, translational investigator in psychopharmacology who has been on the UW–Madison faculty since 2018. His work is focused on improving our understanding of the basis for beneficial and detrimental effects of opioids, cannabinoids, psychedelics, and other neuroplasticity-inducing approaches in the context of novel therapeutic approaches for promoting and maintaining mental health.
Opioid overdoses lead to massive numbers of preventable deaths in Wisconsin and across the United States each year. Improved access to rapid overdose reversal measures is critical, but development of longer-term strategies that reduce risk for relapse and overdose are also needed. Vaccine approaches can help an individual’s own immune system accomplish these goals, but important practical and ethical considerations must also be considered alongside study of these novel interventions.
Badger Talks reflects the tradition of the Wisconsin Idea — to extend the resources of the university to citizens of the state. Over 300 Badger Talks are hosted around the state each year, featuring faculty and staff with expertise in a variety of disciplines. Talk topics range from cutting edge discoveries to happiness in the workplace and everything in between.
Professional, community, and civic organizations, as well as schools, are invited to request a UW–Madison speaker. For more information about Badger Talks or to find a speaker for your next event, contact 608-262-3880 or badgertalks@uwmad.wisc.edu.
