Crash on State Highway 56 caused by deer

Dec. 13, 2025

JEFFERSON, Wis. — Continuous snowfall and slick road conditions are being blamed for a series of recent slide-offs and crashes across Vernon County, but a Saturday evening crash in the town of Jefferson involved a deer.

According to a Vernon County Sheriff’s Office report, at about 6:10 p.m., on Dec. 6, the Vernon County Emergency 911 communications center received an automated crash detection alert with GPS coordinates. Responders later determined the crash occurred about a quarter-mile east of Volden Road on State Highway 56 in the Town of Jefferson.

Authorities said an eastbound vehicle driven by Annaleese Chamberlain, 18, left the roadway and struck a tree after swerving to avoid a deer. Evidence of deer tracks was found at the scene, officials said.

Chamberlain was evaluated on site by Viroqua First Responders and Tri-State Ambulance. No additional injuries were reported..
