COON VALLEY, Wis. — Fire crews responded Saturday evening to a blaze at the Village of Coon Valley’s brush disposal site on Jack Berg Lane, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighters were paged at 5:15 p.m. and arrived to find flames and smoke coming from a large pile of leaves, grass clippings, branches and other yard debris. Crews used two hose lines to contain the fire and requested a backhoe from the Village of Coon Valley Public Works Department. Public works personnel pulled apart the burning pile, allowing firefighters better access to extinguish the flames.
Officials said the fire was caused by wood stove or fireplace ashes that had been discarded about 5 to 6 feet from the brush pile. Fire crews cleared the scene at 7:01 p.m.
Engine 2 and Tender 1 responded, along with the Coon Valley Police Department and village public works.
During a routine check Sunday morning, fire personnel found significant smoke still coming from the brush pile. Crews returned with Engine 2 and again worked with public works staff using a backhoe to break apart and fully extinguish the remaining hot spots. The operation lasted just over an hour.
Village officials reminded residents that only brush, small branches, grass clippings and leaves are allowed at the disposal site.
