The City of Viroqua has announced an upcoming public information meeting scheduled for June 25 at City Hall regarding the Center Avenue reconstruction project that will taking place this summer.

The Center Avenue reconstruction project has been on the city’s radar for some time and the project will include a complete rebuild with new sewer, water and street surface. City Engineer and Director of Public Works Sarah Grainger said the project will also include work on some of the streets connected to Center Avenue. According to Grainger the work area will include Center Avenue from Parkinson to South Street, one block of Court Street, two blocks of Jefferson Street and Terhune along the way.

The project was in danger of being delayed earlier this year when the the city lost the opportunity for funding from Congressional Directed Spending through Congressman Derrick Van Orden’s office. Grainger said the project was on the Congressman’s list for funding but the project was not included with the most recent congressional spending bill.

Despite that setback Grainger said they decided to move ahead because the project did have funding from other sources that they could lose if they did not move forward, including $930,000 from the DOT and $390,000 from the DNR for the sewer and water improvements. The project will also be partially funded with about $60,000 from sewer and water department funds.
