The City of Viroqua is one step closer to beginning a 12-month process to update the City’s Comprehensive Plan, a document created in 2007. On Tuesday, Sept 10, 2024, the City Council voted to release a Request for Proposals (RFP), which will help lead to hiring a firm to execute the project. The RFP also includes an alternate option for a Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan and a second alternate option for a Historic Preservation Plan.
“An up-to-date comprehensive plan provides the backbone for long-term decision-making and will serve as a guide to how the community grows into the future.” said City Administrator Nate Torres.
A Comprehensive Plan takes a long-term, big-picture view of the city’s future and makes recommendations for policies and strategies that will help realize the community vision. It addresses critical areas such as land use, housing, transportation, economic development, and others. The city is seeking proposals from planning consultants interested in guiding and facilitating the process.
“We are looking for a planning consultant who is knowledgeable, collaborative and will deliver a comprehensive plan that is tailored specifically to the needs and wishes of the people of Viroqua,” said Torres.
Firms interested in learning more about the project are encouraged to visit the Comprehensive Plan section of the city website at https://viroqua-wisconsin.com/comprehensive-plan.
A critical component of the process used to develop the Comprehensive Plan will be incorporating public input. Residents are asked to keep an eye out for information on public input opportunities where they can share key priorities and goals for the community’s future. Key public input events will be scheduled in 2025 and posted on the city website. The updated plan will guide the community’s growth, development, and preservation over the next 20 years.
