City of Viroqua Main Street and Sands Road street projects continue this week

April 19, 2025

VIROQUA, Wis. – The city of Viroqua issued an update this week on an ongoing street construction project. According to the notice construction on Sands Road will continue next week and there will be a possible Main Street lane diversion on Thursday or Friday.

The city says Sands Road will be busy with construction next week and the plan calls for a sewer service crossing on Sands Road Monday morning, before traffic increases at the Living Faith Food Pantry. Monday afternoon and Tuesday, work will take place in the most western section of Sands Road, blocking the driveway behind O’Reilly’s, so access will be limited. Wednesday there will be work on the sewer line in the O’Reilly’s parking lot. All these plans are weather permitting.

As early as Thursday, Badger will start the sewer crossing of Main Street at Sands Road. Crews will be boring pipe under the west half of Main Street but open excavating the east half of Main Street. What this means is that both north and south traffic will continue on Main Street; however, traffic will be flowing on the east half of the roadway only. There will be no two-way left-hand turn lane in this section during the lane closure.

The notice states the city understands that there is a lot of construction impacting Main Street at the moment and they ask for everyone’s patience and understanding as work continues to improve the city infrastructure. We are taking every effort to make the lane closure timely.

Important information about the project is available on the construction page of the City website.

As we reported last week the downtown street realignment project is moving along and is nearing completion. The project was organically supposed to be completed last fall but coonstruction delays and weather kept crews from completely finishing the east side of the project, but crews returned to the project this spring and are hoping to being close to done by the end of the month. You can read our previous update on that project below.

As Viroqua street project nears completion city says traffic pattern will change

April 17, 2025

VIROQUA, Wis – City of Viroqua Engineer Sarah Grainger issued a statement today to let motorists know that as their traffic realignment project gets closer to completion some of the traffic patterns downtown will also be changing.

Grainer said things are moving along and the Jefferson Street concrete work is now complete. The concrete at South Street is nearly all poured and will be finished tomorrow.

The current plan is that East Jefferson will be open later this afternoon. That means that both sides of Jefferson are now one-way streets going towards Main Street, i.e. opposite directions. As before, it will take some time to get used to this new configuration. For example, you will need to come from Center Avenue or East Jefferson to get to the Post Office. Please bear with us as we finish the other components of the project on the side streets, such as line painting, that will aid in this transition.

South Street concrete will need time to cure and, therefore, east South Street at Main will not be open until next week. After all this work is complete, both sides of South Street will continue to be two-way streets. If all goes well, the traffic signals will be in place at the end of next week.

With Jefferson planned to open today, the traffic control should then be isolated to the areas needed for South Street work. This configuration will continue through mid-next week. There are materials stored in some of the parking lanes on Main, such as pipe and inlet structures. Please be mindful of these obstacles.

It is expected that work will begin on East Court and Terhune as of mid-next week, possibly Tuesday or Wednesday. During this time there will be the same type of lane closures we have seen up to now, from just north of Court to South Street. There are about two weeks of work at these locations. After that comes the finale ~ painting and restoration.

Information about the project is available at the construction webpage on the city website at https://cms2.revize.com/revize/viroqua/business_detail_T3_R9.php. If you have any questions, wish to set up an appointment to discuss sight specific needs one or one, or want to provide your email to receive these updates, feel free to contact me at 608-637-2937 or sgrainger@viroqua-wisconsin.com.
