City of Viroqua releases details of community build project for Eckhart Park playground

March 22, 2026

The City of Viroqua Parks & Recreation Department is inviting community members to get involved in the exciting new playground project at Eckhart Park.

After months of work the final design for the new playground has been approved by the Viroqua City Council.  Now the Parks & Recreation Department is soliciting proposals through April 6 for the purchase and relocation of play equipment structures currently located at Eckhart Park (435 W. Decker St.).

Viroqua Park and Rec Director Kale Proksch

This is a great opportunity for individuals, organizations, schools, churches, or community groups interested in acquiring quality playground equipment for reuse.  For information on specifications, proposal requirements, and timelines, please see request for proposals document on the City of Viroqua webpage.

To safely complete construction, portions of the park will be closed starting on Monday, July 6.  Special care is being taken to protect and save all trees during construction. The goal is to enhance play opportunities while maintaining the shade and character that make this park so special.

Residents are being asked to consider signing up to be part of the upcoming Playground Build Days at Eckhart Park scheduled for September 28-October 3.  At least 40 people aged 21 and older per shift are needed.  There will be two six-hour shifts per day for six consecutive days.  By turning the project into a community building effort everyone will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact for local families and children.  Currently Community Build Volunteers are needed for several tasks.  Community Build Volunteers are individuals tasked with constructing the new playground.  Also needed to support the project are Committee Members.  Individuals interested in committee work will assist with fundraising, volunteer coordination, logistics, refreshments, and community outreach.

The Viroqua Lions Club will be managing the volunteer sign-up and schedules for the project.  Volunteer registration is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 30.  Further details on how to sign up will be forthcoming.

“The playground is one of the main amenities at Eckhart Park,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kale Proksch. “To complete this project, we’re asking for the community’s help.  Please consider making a financial contribution, volunteering for a committee, or signing up for a shift during the Playground Build Days.  We can complete this project if we all work together.”
