VIROQUA, Wis. – The city of Viroqua issued an update on its downtown street improvement project today. According to the city, traffic on Main Street is still traveling in the easternmost lanes. The intersection closures will shift to West Jefferson and West South Streets, meaning the block between Main and Rock will remain open, however, there will be no through traffic at these intersections.
With the work on the intersection at West Jefferson Street comes the removal of the traffic signals. As such there will be roughly 3-4 weeks when there will be only one traffic signal downtown. The Jefferson signal will be re-installed at South Street and a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon installed at Jefferson Street.
In addition, work will begin on the northwest corner of West Decker Street. Today a temporary truck detour at Broadway was installed for larger vehicles needing to go west bound on State Highway 56. Standard sized vehicle traffic will not need to use this detour. Traffic signals on the northwest corner may be down for a few days but they are a priority to re-install on the new bases as soon as possible.
More information about the project is available at the construction webpage on the City website at https://viroqua-wisconsin.com/highway-safety-improvement…
The work is intended to smooth out traffic flow through downtown, increase pedestrian safety and reduce accidents, specifically rear end collisions that had been increasing. Over the last several years the city has been meeting with engineers and held a number of public input sessions to plan both last years realignment, and this years downtown project. You can read some of previous stories about those meetings and the projects here.
