LA FARGE, Wis. – According to the La Farge Police Department they were alerted to an incident in which scammers attempted to defraud a local electrical contractor by check.
A social media post from the La Farge Police described the incident. The contractor was contacted for a potential job and the “client”/scammer said they would pay the contractor $1,800.
After receiving the check, the contractor was instructed deposit the money, and then pay another person referenced as “the supplier” $1,300.
According to the scammer, only after the supplier received the $1,300, the supplier would bring the keys to the residence so the contractor could begin their work.
Additionally, a check was later received from the scammer for the contractor to deposit.
Luckily, the contractor realized this was a scam, and did not deposit the money and reported it to law enforcement.
It is important to know scams like this can also target individuals and not only businesses.
The electrical contractor and the La Farge Police Department want others to be alerted to this scam.
