The body of Stanley B. Howe, a 45-year-old man from La Crosse who had been missing since April 19, was found Monday afternoon in the Town of Shelby, according to the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office. The discovery ends a search that involved multiple agencies and community volunteers.
Authorities confirmed that coordinated search efforts were discontinued following the discovery. Responding agencies included the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office, La Crosse Police Department, La Crosse Fire Department, and the La Crosse County Medical Examiner’s Office. Howe was located near Hillcrest Drive and City View Lane.
Howe had been reported missing after his vehicle was found at the Paul E. Stry Nature Preserve in La Crosse on April 19, with his phone left inside. At the time, authorities stated he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.
In a statement released through the sheriff’s office, Howe’s family thanked law enforcement, volunteers, and community members for their efforts and support during the search. The family also encouraged anyone struggling with mental health concerns to contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
The sheriff’s office has not released additional information about the circumstances of Howe’s death.
