Bank of Ontario panic alarm in Westby determined to be false alarm

Sept. 22, 2026

WESTBY, Wis. — A reported panic alarm at the Bank of Ontario’s Westby branch prompted a law enforcement response Tuesday morning before authorities determined there was no threat to the public.

The Vernon County Communication Center received a call from an alarm company at approximately 11:24 a.m. Tuesday reporting that a panic alarm had been activated at the bank, according to the Westby Police Department.

Law enforcement officers and sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and followed established emergency procedures. As a precaution, authorities established a soft perimeter around the bank while members of the Vernon County Combined Tactical Unit were notified and prepared to respond.

Command staff later made contact with bank personnel and confirmed that the alarm had been activated in error.

Police said there was no danger to the public at any time during the incident.

No injuries were reported, and no criminal activity was found.

Westby Police Chief Scott C. Stuber said the incident was determined to be a false alarm. Authorities released no additional information.
