Authorities seek public’s help locating wood chipper reported stolen in La Crosse County

Sept. 15, 2025

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Authorities in La Crosse County are asking for the public’s assistance after a $10,000 wood chipper was reported stolen from a residential lot in the Township of Shelby earlier this month.

According to the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office, the theft occurred on the morning of Sept. 9 near the intersection of 26th Street South and William Place. The missing equipment is a 2017 Vermeer BC900XL brush chipper, which was mounted on a trailer and would have required a 2 5/16-inch ball hitch to tow.

Investigators say the machine shows normal wear and has no personal markings, but it can be identified by a dent located beneath the gas tank damage reportedly caused by a forklift. The serial number is listed as 1VR712167H1002232.

A photo of a similar model has been released to aid in identification.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or has information about the whereabouts of the stolen equipment is urged to contact Investigator Lt. John Williams at the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office by calling (608) 785-5584 or emailing jwilliams@lacrossecounty.org.

The case number is 00-25-19590.
