VIROQUA, Wis. — Vernon County residents will begin receiving emergency notifications directly to their phones starting Oct. 1, as the county rolls out a new mass alert system aimed at improving public safety and communication during critical events.
The Vernon County Office of Emergency Management announced this week that it has activated the Everbridge Mass Notification Alert system, a platform designed to deliver real-time alerts about severe weather, public health threats, road closures, evacuations, and other emergencies. While the system supports multiple forms of communication, officials emphasized that phone call notifications will now be a key component of the county’s outreach strategy.
“This is about reaching people quickly and reliably,” said Brandon Larson, Vernon County’s Emergency Management Director. “Whether it’s a tornado warning or a boil water advisory, we want residents to hear it directly—on their phones—without delay.”
The system will begin issuing automated phone calls to landlines and mobile devices for registered users. Residents are encouraged to verify and update their contact information to ensure they receive alerts tailored to their location and preferences. A registration portal is available online for managing notification settings.
Officials say the move reflects a broader commitment to proactive emergency communication, especially in rural areas where traditional media or internet access may be limited.
“Phone alerts are a game-changer for reaching vulnerable populations,” Larson said. “We’re urging everyone to take five minutes to sign up or confirm their information.”
