July 28, 2025

VIROQUA, Wis – Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports on Sunday, July 20, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center was notified of a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 27, south of US Highway 14 in the town of Franklin.

A Sheriffs report states that Mary Kaye Johnson, 84, of Viroqua driving north when it appeared she experienced a medical event.  Johnson lost control while negotiating a curve, went off the right side of the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Johnson was transported to Vernon Health by Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance.  Johnson was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle airbags deployed.  Any injuries appeared non-life-threatening.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Viroqua Fire Department, Viroqua First Responders, Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance, and Vernon Electric Cooperative.  Sheriff Torgerson would also like to recognize the group of Good Samaritans who stopped to render aid prior to the arrival of first responders.

The crash remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
