VIROQUA, Wis. – Another Vernon County Fair is in the books and this year’s fair had particularly great weather, with warm temperatures, fairly low humidity, and no rain. Final attendance number are still being tallied but Vernon County Agricultural Society President David Hornby said typical attendance runs between 20,000 and 25,000 people.
Hornby said the fair once again offered the full menu of exhibits, rides, food and vendors. The grandstand events included a horse pull, a tractor pull and a demolition derby. The one exception was the traditional harness racing that had to be canceled this year. The Vernon County grounds has long history of harness racing but Hornby said there were a number of factors that caused that event to be canceled, including not enough horses and drivers so the decision was made Thursday morning to cancel.
Hornby said there is an endless of list volunteers and community organizations that assist the fair board in pulling off the event every year and they continue to improve the facilities and grounds. A new building was put up this but it was not quite ready for the public and in the future new bathrooms are in the works. Hornby said ticket sales are their main revenue stream but they do rent their facilities and work with with the carnival company to keep costs as low as possible.
