VIROQUA, Wis. – Early last fall the Vernon County Forester Nick Gilman discovered
significant oak wilt at Upper Sidie Hollow.
“Oak Wilt tends to spread quickly,” said Gilman. “We did a significant harvest at Sidie in order to reduce the likelihood of this disease spreading further.”
The harvest at this location was good timing for the construction of a new
shower house and expansion of campsites. Removal of invasive species was also
part of the project.
“Now that we have addressed the oak wilt and worked on the improvements, we
can plant new trees, prairie, and grasses,” said Vernon County Parks Administrator Martin Kennedy.
Approximately 30 two-year-old trees will be planted to help with shade and
diversity.
Vernon County Land & Water is working closely with Vernon Trails to
complete necessary reroutes and to ensure the multi-use trail system will be in
good shape. Trail workdays are being planned by Vernon Trails to be every third
Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. beginning on March 19th at the Upper Sidie
Hollow campground. New seeding and campsites should be ready in the first week
of May.
